LEWIS PHARMACEUTICAL INFORMATION

BUSINESS GOALS

Lewis Pharmaceutical Information (LPI) approached OPG with the request to rebuild a previously designed Pharmacy Advisor program. The previous platform was developed in traditional Windows software with a Microsoft SQL server database. The program analyzes drug combinations to detect and alert when there are potential adverse drug reactions for a given patient. Adverse drug reactions are a sizable challenge and lead to many undesirable outcomes each day. The use of this tool is focused on cost reduction and ultimately saving lives. The market for the new platform was to work with health insurance providers and medical providers to analyze patient data and tailor medical prescriptions to individual patients. Because the legacy platform was developed in older technology, OPG was tapped to reconstruct the platform in a new, modern, and secure web software application that could be extended and managed into the future.

PLATFORM GOALS

LPI identified several key features in need of change for Pharmacy Advisor. In addition to an initial content migration from the old system to the new web-based platform, the new platform must include necessary HIPAA compliant functions. It must also provide robust reporting based on algorithmic logic to provide the level of safety of a patient’s medication profile, provide dosage reports with adjustment recommendations, as well as the ability of medical providers to tailor medications to the individual patients.

OUR SOLUTION

OPG’s solution started by performing a patient and drug data migration from the old system to the new relational database. Furthermore, the team came together to design and build an efficient and modern platform. A key challenge in the process was constructing a proper user interface design for the enormous amount of data in the patient profile. Significant amounts of data had to be easily reviewed and managed without unnecessary scrolling and window changing. The solution delivered provided all patient data to the user in a clean, elegant, and effective way. In a phased development effort, OPG also developed a detailed set of business logic, drawing on hundreds of points of data relative to each patient, to determine complex drug interactions. The components involved in the calculations included obvious items such as the drugs being taken by the patient, but also more detailed elements such as dosage, frequency, creatinine levels, and many, many more. Through the process of collaboration with LPI, OPG created an effective application that allows LPI to produce an accurate patient profile safety rating as a leading indicator of the patients’ drug interaction health. In addition, OPG developed a secure and scalable API that allows other firms to access and license the platform intelligence for a variety of use cases.

RESULTS

OPG delivered a powerful PHP web-based software application to enable the intelligence necessary to reduce adverse drug interactions in patients, promote a more tailored approach to drug prescriptions, and decrease medical insurance costs. While the technology to accomplish the goals is expansive, the end result is simple: cut costs and save lives.

PROJECT GOALS

Data migration of all patient and drug data from the old, Microsoft SQL Server based system to the new platform.

Design of a visually compact patient profile area to reduce the need for scroll in order to provide full patient information on one screen.

Apply sophisticated coding methodologies and security practices for the HIPAA compliant platform development.

Develop highly advanced medical intelligence outputs based on a large set of variable healthcare data points.

Develop and manage a highly secure and scalable API to allow integration with licensed professional medical partners.

Create a modern system structure that can be easily managed and grow with the company over time.
